Shubman Gill injury: Why is Gill not fielding on Day 4 of 2nd Chennai Test vs England?
Shubman Gill injury: The Indian opening batsman hasn’t taken the field today due to a blow he copped while fielding yesterday.
During the third day of the second Test of the ongoing England’s tour of India in Chennai, India opening batsman Shubman Gill had hurt his left elbow while fielding at short leg.
It all had happened on the final delivery of the 18th over when England batsman Dan Lawrence swept a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery. At short leg, Gill was quick to judge Lawrence’s shot but stood up instead of sitting down. As a result, the 21-year old player got hit on his left elbow.
Ideally, a short leg fielder is advised to bend down completely instead of standing up for the former protects him/her from getting hit on the body especially when a batsman prepares to sweep or pull.

Reserve opening batsman Mayank Agarwal, who has turned 30 today and had substituted for injured Cheteshwar Pujara on the second day of the match, is once again substituting on the field for Gill. Opening the batting with Rohit Sharma in the match, Gill had scored 0 and 14 in the two innings respectively.
As far as the match is concerned, England lost Lawrence (26) to Ashwin in the first hour after the right-hand batsman missed a delivery after stepping out to be followed by Rishabh Pant affecting a praiseworthy stumping dismissal.
