“We’ll do it next season”: Warriors GM Bob Myers reveals why Stephen Curry did not sign an extension ahead of the 2020-21 NBA season

Warriors’ superstar Stephen Curry had a chance to sign a contract extension in the offseason, but he did not do so

Stephen Curry is having a spectacular season so far. Curry had won 2 consecutive MVP awards back in 2015 and 2016. He then settled to a lesser offensively producing role when KD joined the Warriors.

Curry gave up on individual accolades for the team, and it worked out well, as the Warriors won 2 championships in 3 seasons with Durant. They would have won a third if KD and Klay did not get injured in the Finals.

After missing most of last season due to injury, Curry is back. He has shown no signs that he isn’t the same player as he was in his last MVP season, if not better.

Steph has been averaging 29.7 points, 6.3 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.7 steals while shooting 41.7% from the deep. He has led the Warriors to a 19-17 season so far and is one of the candidates for MVP this season.

Bob Myers explains why Stephen Curry did not sign an extension with the Warriors this offseason

Warriors’ president of basketball operations, Bob Myers was recently on the 95.7 The Game, where he talked about Curry not signing his extension, even though he had an option. Steph rejected a 3 year, $156 million extension offer from the Warriors in the offseason.

Stephen Curry is set to make $46 million in the upcoming season. Myers talks about the various possibilities of contracts that Steph may have once the current season ends.

“He could sign a four-year deal after this season [or] a five-year deal after that. It wasn’t anything that was difficult. No hard conversation. It was just, ‘Hey, let’s talk about it at the end of the year.’ So it’s really whatever he’s hoping to do and wants to do.”

Myers was asked if Curry not signing is a sign of trouble, he responded by saying,

“I think he’s happy. Obviously, fans always are gonna be worried about Steph Curry. But I feel like he’s in a very good place personally [and] professionally,” Myers mentioned. “I feel pretty good about him wanting to be around.”

“I don’t personally have any — besides the paranoid fears that everybody has that aren’t really rational — besides once in awhile, ‘Well what if this happened?’ But those aren’t based on fact. So I feel good about it and I think he feels good about it.”

For one, I believe Steph is not going anywhere and would retire a Warriors. With Klay returning next season, and the younger guys blossoming well, the Warriors would be back in contention.
