“We’d have to stay until Michael Jordan made more half-court shots than Steve Kerr”: Mandy Cohen narrates some more anecdotes about the Bulls legend’s competitive spirit
Mandy Cohen gave an interview recently, in which he talked about the chip that Michael Jordan always carried on his shoulder for Steve Kerr.
Mandy Cohen was one of the producers for the Bulls’ live sports coverage during MJ’s prime. She travelled around a ton while covering the team, so she has some unrevealed stories about Jordan.
She recently went on a podcast to share some of these stories with the rest of the world. Among the topics that came up was how Jordan was incurably competitive with Steve Kerr at a halfcourt shot competition.
“Steve Kerr was the master of the three-point basket. And at the end of every shoot around… You do that half-court shot. And everybody takes a half-court shot to see who can make it. So they were no exception.”
“But a lot of times, we’d have to stay until Michael hit more than Steve. Just weren’t going anywhere, would hold up the whole bus until he hit more. That was just his personality. He was not going to lose at anything. You could see it in just every little detail.”

The former WGN TV producer also talked about a time when Jordan couldn’t get a bad refereeing call off his mind despite the team blowing their opponents out:
“One time we got on the plane after a game and we’re flying home, gets on the plane. He comes running up to me right in my face, and he goes, ‘I did not travel in the second quarter minutes ago.’”
“And I’m like ‘okay, first of all, I have nothing to do with that. So why are you screaming at me? I did not ref the game.’ I said, ‘But you didn’t get called for a foul in the fourth quarter’ when he’s like, ‘okay, fine.’”
Anyone who’s followed MJ through the course of his career knows that he was incurably competitive. The lengths to which he’d obsess over winning at everything were apparent in his approach to practically every aspect of life.
