“I believe in myself” – George Russell hints at Mercedes move in 2022 as he targets world championship
“I believe in myself” – Williams driver George Russell hints at a Mercedes move in 2022 as looks to win a deserved world championship.
George Russell almost won a race last season, and is a shoo-in for the world title once he switches to Mercedes, whenever it might be. He is proud of that Sakhir Circuit stint, and his capability to perform under pressure.
“That opportunity I had last year showed that when the pressure is on, when I am thrown into the deep end, I was able to do a pretty solid job. I got a small taste of being at the front. I believe in myself. I believe I’m capable.”
“I don’t believe I’m the finished product yet. I believe I’ve still got to improve but I think I’m definitely capable of winning races and fighting for World Championships.

George Russell keen to move to Mercedes
The Brit is clearly intent on making the move up to Mercedes, and potentially winning a world title with them. As things stand, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas both have one-season contracts, making it a possibility that Russell might replace one of the two come next season.
“Ultimately I need to find myself in a car and a team that I think will give me the best opportunity in doing that because I need to be in that position now to start capitalizing when I get into my prime.”
“They’re (Williams) realistic. They know my ambitions and they want more than anything to be able to provide me with a car that is capable of winning races and they gave me my opportunity, I’m a loyal guy, I’ve had a fantastic time with them, equally I don’t believe I’m a driver who is deserving of finishing 20th in the championship.”
