Grammy winner J Cole will be playing for the Rwanda Patriots in the first-ever edition of the NBA’s Basketball Africa League.

For over several decades, basketball was a USA-dominated sport. Today, the league has been more global than ever. With innumerable foreign leagues and many international players in the NBA, the game has been recognised worldwide.

It was noticed that over the last couple of years, the NBA and FIBA had been working together for a basketball league in Africa. Much to their success- Basketball Africa League has been launched. The new venture is set to consist of 12 teams spread over the entire continent.

Basketball has a major influence on the rap industry and vice versa. A North Carolina-based rapper, J Cole will be playing in the newly launched league for the Rwanda Patriots BBC team. Out of the four foreign players spot, the Rwanda-based team has used one to acquire the Grammy award winner.

J Cole is expected to play 3-6 games in the Basketball Africa League

Jermaine Cole, a 36-year-old basketball enthusiast, had previously played in the 2012 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. The American rapper had also appeared in the 2019 dunk contest, where he assisted his friend Dennis Smith Jr for a dunk, and himself attempted a dunk moments after DSJ slammed the ball.

Cole, a star on his high school basketball team, ended up choosing music as his career rather than going to a D1 college team. However, in recent history, he has also been spotted practising alongside NBA trainer Chris Brickley. He clearly still loves playing the sport and previously did receive a tryout from the Detroit Pistons.

Quite peculiarly, Cole is set to drop his new album “The Off-Season” this Friday and will be playing his first match on Sunday. He will be making his professional basketball debut against the Nigeria River Hoopers. He is expected to play 3-6 matches for his new team.

Even though his dreams of being a professional NBA player could be a bit far-fetched,  he definitely can showcase the talents he has. And who knows, he actually might even be able to grace the NBA as he always aspired to.
