“The only thing is, that’s so Utopian” – Helmut Marko believes George Russell to Mercedes is a done deal
“The only thing is, that’s so Utopian” – Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko would love to have George Russell in his team but concedes him moving to Mercedes next season is a done deal.
Dr. Helmut Marko has thrown in his hat for George Russell’s signature, on behalf of Red Bull. The head of driver development is impressed with Russell’s performances at Williams, overperforming the car in most races.
But on the question of Red Bull poaching him from the clutches of Mercedes, Marko wasn’t too enthusiastic, considering his movement to the German giants is a done deal, for everyone in the know.
“Russell is certainly worth considering with the performances he is now showing at Williams. The only thing is, that’s so Utopian, because if Mercedes let him go, that would be such a faux pas, that I honestly can’t imagine it. If I am informed correctly, then that is not relevant.”
I expect George to get the 2nd Mercedes cockpit for next year. But I’m not sure Mercedes will make an announcement already this weekend. The original plan was to wait till the summer break, according to my info. But plans can change of course.

Red Bull beat Mercedes to Max Verstappen’s signature
Red Bull have past experience of beating Mercedes to sign a top-notch driver. Max Verstappen was offered deals by both teams, but while Mercedes was offering a seat with a partner team in F2, Red Bull convinced him by giving him the seat in F1.
Safe to say, Verstappen hasn’t disappointed at all, and unless a miraculous recovery by Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, should win his maiden F1 world title this season.
“We offered Max a Formula 1 seat straight away. Mercedes wanted to put him in Formula 2. And I think the Verstappen family also fits much better with Red Bull than with Mercedes.”
