Rafael Nadal feels Roger Federer’s scheduling method is very risky
Comebacks in sport are what make you fall in love with it. The sheer grit and determination required to script a comeback is what makes it one of the most sought after moments in sport.
Roger Federer’s comeback from injury last season was probably one of the most romantic moments in Tennis history. A down and out champion, vying to make it big on tour once again, and succeeding in grand style.
While the comeback was splendidly carried out, what was most striking about Roger Federer’s season was how he picked his schedule, skipping the entire Clay season and focussing only on tournaments and surfaces that suited his strengths.
But Rafa Nadal feels that the path that Roger chose last season is loaded with risk, as one loss here or there, and Federer could have had a mediocre season.
Federer just played 57 matches last season, losing only 5 and winning 7 major titles in the process.
When asked if Nadal could replicate Federer’s method this season, Nadal said that his style of play is different and he can’t see himself going down Federer’s road, as that path is laden with risks.
“He had a fantastic year. What he did is very difficult. Playing so less, being able to win almost every time you return to play is a very big risk.”
“When it goes well, it seems its right but in truth it’s very difficult that it happens the way it did.”
“If you try it again, you may not be as successful as you were this year. But well, I am 31 and he’s 36. I have my career and he has his own,” Nadal told the Express.
“I do what I believe is better for me by always getting help from doctors, coaches, physical trainers, and deciding with my team.”
“Together we come to an agreement that is better for my body and tennis,” Nadal concluded.
