MS Dhoni feels captaincy is not a difficult job

MS Dhoni’s captaincy record has been stellar at the international and the franchise level.

Being the only captain to have won all ICC Trophies, MS Dhoni’s contribution towards Indian cricket has been immense, having been given captaincy after the disastrous 2007 World Cup campaign, and endowed with the responsibility of shaping the next few years of Indian cricket.

Dhoni was walking into unchartered territory, but grabbed his opportunity with both hands, winning the inaugural T20 World Cup and never looking back since.

With CSK as well, Dhoni brought all his captaincy skills to the fore, making the franchise the most successful one in IPL history.

At a recent promotion event, MS Dhoni spoke about captaincy and how he would take to it after being away from it for the past year(having given up ODI captaincy in January 2016).

“I never captained any team before I became captain of the Indian cricket team.” said Dhoni.

“I don’t think it is a difficult job. Secondly, the wicketkeeper is always considered the vice-captain of a team. He is somebody who is in the position to watch the game very closely. He understands the pace of the wicket, how the bowler is bowling, how the batsman is batting,” he added.

Dhoni, who has been appointed as the captain of the CSK franchise for the next season, spoke about how wicket keepers analyse the game better, being involved in it all the time.

“Before a few of us – the wicketkeepers – started captaining sides, there was talk about why burden keepers with more responsibility. But stats have proved that wicketkeepers have always been good captains. Maybe because they are so close to the game, they have a very good analysis of the game,” the CSK captain said.

“You need to have a good team. If the resources aren’t good, it doesn’t matter who the captain is, be it Ricky Ponting or Steve Waugh or Clive Lloyd. So you need to have a good, strong team.”
