Virat Kohli sends a message to India’s victorious U-19 team
It seems only yesterday that a chubby Virat Kohli lifted the U-19 World Cup for India. The teenager’s delight was obvious for everyone to see, as Kohli could hardly have imagined that this was just the stepping stone to what will prove to be an incredible career.
That was in 2008, as India won only their second ever U-19 World title. Ten years later, Prithvi Shaw had the honour of lifting India’s U-19 World Cup in New Zealand, as the Indian Colts comprehensively beat the Aussies in the final.
This side is littered with future superstars, as the likes of Shaw, Gill and Nagarkoti underlined their credentials as players to watch out for in the future. All three have already bagged big IPL contracts, with Shaw going to Delhi Daredevils and Gill and Nagarkoti all set to play for KKR in the upcoming IPL season.
After the match, Shaw was visibly delighted and paid tribute to his side.
“Can’t express what I’m feeling right now, really proud of it. All credit to our support staff for really supporting us for the last two years. Rahul Sir himself is a legend, the Wall we call him.”
“It was a crucial hundred from Manjot. Gill was batting so well. Both pacers, Kamlesh and Mavi, have been executing things so well through the tournament. It’s been wonderful playing matches here.”
Player of the tournament, Shubman Gill was also delighted with his squad.
“I am really proud of my team. We were fortunate enough to have Rahul as coach. He was just telling me to express my game and keep it on the ground. Had a good time here. It’s been very exciting for me. Hope to do well in IPL also.”
The final belonged to Manjot Kalra, as the left hander scored a superb century, as India romped home by eight wickets.
“Great feeling. Enjoyed a lot. Conditions were very good. It was a flat wicket to bat on. In the team, it’s been a great environment.”
After the victory, Virat Kohli took to Twitter to congratulate the U-19 side, and wished them all the best for the future.
What a win for the U19 boys, take it as a stepping stone; Long long way to go! Enjoy the moment! 😊👏 @BCCI #U19CWC pic.twitter.com/D8mGdakxZu
