‘Ruthless’ LeBron James Once Asked Gilbert Arenas for a Second Opinion on 5ft 10in Bronny James
There is something about getting validation from a foreign source that helps you reassure yourself of a decision. If the verdict is good, you can breathe a sigh of relief. With Bronny James, LeBron didn’t want to be wrong, so he enlisted the help of a lethal scorer.
LeBron has friends and acquaintances all across America from his 20 years in the league. Naturally, if he wanted to learn something about a young player, all he needed to do was dial the phone once.
And that is exactly what he did. The young player in question? None other than his son Bronny James. And who did he ask for help? One of the most potent scorers’ the NBA has ever produced, Gilbert Arenas.
Why had LeBron enlisted Gilbert Arenas
No Chil Gil, as he calls himself, Gilbert Arenas now spends his time giving a multitude of torrid opinions on NBA players; past and present.
He also scouts young stars. And among them, is Bronny James. At the behest of LeBron himself, “Agent Zero” was asked to scout Bronny in 2017 or 2018. The exact timeline is not clear.
LeBron James wanted to see if his son, was ready to take the next step in high school. Bronny was also 5’10” at the time and was shorter than LeBron, hence the hesitation.
He tasked Gilbert to see his game and Gil, fondly took up the task. He even made a checklist to assure LeBron that the path for Bronny was indeed right. Gilbert then met up with Bronny, who wanted to work on more.
The foundations that Bronny James built on
As per Gil, LeBron James Jr. wanted to work on his game. And they got to work immediately. So Arenas took them to work and he was training with Scottie Clark, who is older than Bronny.
The day wore on and Scottie was besting Bronny, so Gilbert put in a litmus test by instigating the prodigal son. And the catalyst was just asking him if would take the beating.
Gil narrates that Bronny went on to hit Scottie for 5-0 in the next few minutes. We are not at all surprised. He has been electric since making his debut as a senior. Hopefully, Gil’s instincts are right and we get to see Bronny play at the highest level.
