George Russell describes having Lewis Hamilton 1.3 seconds behind as ‘incredibly high pressure’ situation during Brazil GP

George Russell secured his maiden race win at the 2022 Brazil GP in his first year with Mercedes alongside Lewis Hamilton.

The victory in Brazil was also the Brackley-based team’s single victory in the 2022 season. On top of that, the Mercedes duo finished 1-2 at the race delivering the best season performance.

After the end of the season, Russell revealed how his relationship with the 7-time world champion in his first year as his teammate.

Speaking to the media, the young Briton said that it was quite harmonious and he was impressed by seeing how Hamilton works with his people and keeps their morale high no matter what.

George Russell shares his experience of racing with Hamilton

Russell brought the Brackley-based team’s only win in the 2022 season at the Brazil GP and revealed that he felt huge relief when he finally crossed the chequered flag at the track.

Russell admitted that he already knew how fast his teammate really is and that partnering with him is going to be a huge challenge but the 24-year-old was glad that he was able to manage that challenge.

Detailing the events of the race in Brazil which was also his maiden GP win, Russell said that seeing Hamilton in his rearview during the safety car period – knowing that he was only 1.3 seconds behind – was an incredibly high-pressure situation.

Russell had his race engineer constantly telling him the gap because he knew that a single mistake would enable Hamilton to take over him.

Hamilton vs Russell could be 10x worse than Nico Rosberg

Former Williams and Ferrari team manager Peter Windsor believes that if Mercedes produces a championship-winning car the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg could get 10x worse than Nico Rosberg.

Windsor thinks that Russell is a tough and hard player and he is going to drive into Hamilton a lot of times if the duo is provided with a championship-winning car.
