Vince Carter’s Mother Hilariously Told Stephen Curry’s Parents, Dell and Sonya, That She Believed Her Son Would Break His Arm In The Dunk Contest

Vince Carter is widely recognized as one of, if not, the greatest dunkers in the history of basketball. The power with which he dunked the ball in relation to the creativity he put on display while in the air was simply a combination that fans had not seen prior to his arrival into the league. 

However, upon witnessing Carter’s expert aerial maneuverers, many believe that is all he was about. They would be mistaken as Vince was one of the best 3-level scorers in the league by the time he’d reach his second season. In 1999-2000, he earned his first All-Star and All-NBA nod all while leading Toronto to a Playoff berth. 

It was also in 2000 that Vince would cement his name in the pantheon of dunkers in league history. This is due to that fact that he decided to participate in the Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend that year and put the whole world on notice.

Vince Carter breaking his arm was a fear that his mother had 

Dell and Sonya Curry started a podcast called ‘Raising Fame’ where they would talk to family members of world-class athletes ask them what it was like nurturing young talent like that. However, following their divorce, they would end this podcast of theirs. 

Michelle Carter-Scott, Vince’s mother, came on one of the final episodes of the podcast and revealed how she was actually afraid her son would break his son trying to do some of the dunks he wanted to do for All-Star Weekend in 2000. 

“It wasn’t until the one where he put his arm in the rim that I start breathing. All I could think about was, ‘Oh my God, he’s going to break his arm and we cannot go back to Toronto because Butch Carter will kill us both,’” said Michelle. 

Off the court, Michelle Carter-Scott pushed her son Vince to elevate above the rest. Even when Vince started dunking in the SIXTH GRADE, Michelle stayed focused on mentoring a well-rounded man. At 43, Vince is now doing the same for young players around the @nba. pic.twitter.com/Tv9ym0uw33

Luckily for the mother and son duo, Vince Carter had arguably the greatest Dunk Contest performance in the history of the NBA. He won the contest with moves like 360 windmills and his signature ‘honey dip’ dunk. 

Vince Carter would become a journeyman of sorts after Toronto and New Jersey 

The Raptors traded Vince Carter to the New Jersey Nets in a package that got them Alonzo Mourning. Raptors fans would boo him upon his return to Toronto but Vince’s feelings towards the city never turned negative. 

He would be on a contending New Jersey Nets team for 5 seasons from 2004 to 2009. After this however, he found himself on squads such as the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Memphis Grizzlies, and many more. 

He would finish his career off with the Atlanta Hawks during the 2019-20 NBA season after playing 22 seasons in the league.
