Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Glenn Phillips (25) hit three consecutive sixes off Rajasthan Royals pacer Kuldip Yadav (1/50) to turn the tables for his team in a game-changing penultimate over of the recently concluded Indian Premier League 2023 Match 52 in Jaipur.

Playing only his second match of the season, Phillips never batted like someone who had been warming the bench for the last five weeks. All the right-handed batter’s three sixes and a four came off Yadav as he made the hosts pay heavily for picking an uncapped Indian bowler over Impact Player Obed McCoy (0/13) for what is generally considered a decisive over in this format.

If truth be told, scoring 41 runs in the last two overs was going to be no mean task for SRH. With all their well-set batters back to the pavilion, Phillips had no option than to take the onus upon himself to seal the highest successful T20 run-chase at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

With the left-arm bowler missing a yorker, Phillips hit a low full-toss for a six over long-off to get going on the first ball of the over. A similar ball called for a similar treatment as the right-handed batter didn’t let go of a simple run-scoring opportunity. Yadav’s attempt to bowl a slower ball brought no change as Phillips hit a short-ish delivery for a long six over deep mid-wicket.

Although a fortunate one, Phillips hitting a four off the fourth ball of the over saw him accumulating 22 priceless runs within a span of four deliveries.

While Hyderabad’s 4-wicket victory wouldn’t have been possible without Abdul Samad‘s (17) last-over heroics aided by RR pacer Sandeep Sharma‘s (0/48) no-ball, Phillips was a deserving candidate for the Player of the Match award on the back of a seven-ball cameo coming in a match where three half-centuries and a four-wicket haul were registered in total.
