“Got Away With Murder”: Cam Newton Narrates Lucky $17,000 Bill For Rookie Dinner
There are many NFL players who cannot still believe they are playing football at the highest levels. However, this is a feeling that is common with those who enter the league for the first time ever. Though that feeling does eventually fade away, the first year is always surreal.
Not everything is a cherish-able memory, though, as one particular tradition strikes the fear of God in rookies. Just like many rookies in the league, Cam Newton also faced the fear of the rookie dinner. But as it turns out, he was getting away much easier than expected.
Newton, who was drafted #1 overall by the Panthers in 2011, talks on his podcast ‘Funky Fridays’ about his experience with a long-standing tradition. He says, “At the end of the year, we had a rookie dinner, and I remember that because…they close the restaurant. They got some big a** steaks. I don’t even drink but that’s a big a** wine bottle and champagne… And then they sent me that bill? Oh, My Goodness.”
He goes on to explain how he was lucky enough to get only a $17,000 bill. “The tab, I think was upwards of $17,000. I ain’t never spent that type of money in my life… but then I started hearing other stories like $50,000, $60,000, and this that and third, oh shoot I got away with murder,” he says.
Newton had a massive controversy overshadow his college career
While Cam Newton is known for making controversial statements, his saga with trouble started way before he was even picked by a college. Apparently, it seems his father tried to wrestle money out of the University of Mississippi, in order for Newton to play for them. When the NCAA caught wind of this, they quickly started a very slow investigation, which ended up exonerating Newton completely.
Since then, that controversy has taken a back seat, after he started making some very not-so-nice statements. He found himself in hot water after he made some unsavory, misogynistic comments about women not knowing how to cook. It seems he is simmering down a bit. Though with Cam Newton, can fans really expect him to not stir something up?
