MSK Prasad on Captaincy: The Chief Selector has laid emphasis on building leaders other than the leader within the team.

With India winning the Nidahas Trophy and the Asia Cup under the leadership of stand-in captain Rohit Sharma earlier this year, it had created a plenty of talks about whether the reigns of the limited-overs side should be given to the 31-year old Sharma.

Apart from being practical, the suggestion would have also decreased the load from regular captain Virat Kohli’s shoulders. However, whether the management will take such a drastic step remained the question.

After announcing the ODI squad for the first two ODIs against West Indies later this month, India’s Chief Selector MSK Prasad was asked about the notion of having two captain in the same playing eleven. Prasad said that apart from these two leaders, the selection committee is looking at building each member of the squad as a leader.

During an interaction with the media after the announcement, he was quoted, “In 2015, Virat had taken over as a captain of the Test team. Subsequently, in all formats in 2017. He has led the team from the front.

“We are No. 1 [No. 2 in ODIs and T20Is] in all formats of the game. As a player and captain, he has excelled. Whenever a need arised, whether it is Ajinkya Rahane [Tests] or Rohit Sharma [limited-overs formats], they did reasonably well.”

“Apart from them, we want everybody to think like leaders. We are looking at that aspect. The day where all the 15 players start thinking like leaders, we will be an unbeatable side and in that process Rohit has emerged and Ajinkya has led and we all want all the others to rise to that level and start thinking about themselves as the leader of this team.”
