“He Made a Bet”: Maria Sharapova Recalls Novak Djokovic Asking Her on Dinner Date Using His Tennis
Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic have long shared a camaraderie together. Both the players started their careers during the same year and have been seen enjoying each other’s company. In a recent interview, Maria Sharapova revealed an incident when the two had a fun bet and went to a dinner together. The former Grand Slam champion even recalled something Djokovic said during their dinner together as particularly funny.
Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic have been friends for a long time. Sharapova and Djokovic have even participated in a few charity event matches and thrilled the crowd with their chemistry while also featuring in a few commercials together to great success.
Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic go out for dinner
In a podcast interview with former player Andrea Petkovic, Maria Sharapova said that during a mixed-doubles match in Indian Wells, Novak Djokovic challenged her to a bet that if he won, they would go out to dinner. Sharapova accepted not expecting Djokovic to win. The Serbian emerged victorious and soon informed her that they were eating dinner that evening at a Japanese restaurant.
Sharapova reminisced about their dinner and recalled a funny incident when Djokovic pulled out a old Kotak camera. The Serbian star then asked Sharapova if they can have a picture together before handing the camera to the waiter.
“I remember we had won a couple of Grand Slams. We played an exhibition match at Indian Wells and he made a bet that if he won the match we would go to dinner and he won the match. It was so funny when we went to dinner he was like can we take a photo?”
Djokovic and Sharapova’s friendship extends well beyond the dinner table. The two tennis superstars have shared the screen in commercials and exhibition matches showcasing their friendship.
Sharapova impressed with Djokovic’s longevity
Sharapova, a former World No. 1 in women’s tennis, is impressed with Djokovic’s longevity. She spoke admirably about the Serbian’s preparation and dedication to the sport. The Belarusian star

Both Sharapova and Djokovic broke onto the tennis scene at the same time and won Grand Slam titles at young age. Sharapova actually won a Grand Slam title before the Serbian. Sharapova has seamlessly transitioned to a life outside of competitive tennis after some controversial bans in her career and Novak Djokovic is still going strong at the age of 36, winning Grand Slam titles.
Sharapova has admitted that she is a Novak Djokovic fan and hopes that the Serbian wins more Grand Slam titles. Sharapova may have moved away from tennis during the peak of her career but she has made a memorable impact in tennis history.
