Wayne Rooney felt ’embarrassed’ during his final season at Old Trafford, the former English international has revealed.
Wayne Rooney left Manchester United in 2017 for his boyhood club, Everton. The legendary English forward came to Old Trafford in 2004 and spent 13 seasons at Manchester United, and became the highest goalscorer for the club.
Throughout his career in Manchester United, Wayne Rooney won multiple Premier League titles, and reached the pinnacle of his club career in 2008 when he lifted the Champions League trophy.
Rooney also won the FA Cup in 2016, and lifted League Cup and various Community Shield titles. During his time at Manchester United, Rooney also became the highest goalscorer for the English national team.
As the English forward came back to the national side for his farewell match against the US, Rooney talked to Manchester United and reflected on his career at the club.

The former Manchester United forward has revealed that he became embarrassed towards the end of his club career at Old Trafford. He stated that he began to doubt at himself in his final season.
“There are moments when you do doubt yourself,” Rooney told Sky Sports.

The former United no. 10 insisted that he was good enough to get a place in the team, but was never given the opportunity.

“I came on for one minute in the Europa League final. I was about to come on against Southampton in the League Cup final, and in those moments it was embarrassing.”
Rooney shared the moments after the Capital One Cup final against Southampton, stating that Mourinho wanted him to lift the trophy, but he was embarrassed to do so.
“Tonight, being back at Wembley, in front of the home fans, the fans were great, gave me a great reception.”

“It was getting to a point where I was embarrassed. I thought ‘I can’t keep doing this’, as hard as it was to leave United.
“In the Southampton game, [manager Jose] Mourinho came to me and said: ‘I want you to lift the trophy.’ I was like: ‘Well, I didn’t even play in the game.’
Despite coming on in the 57th minute, no other player on the pitch created more chances (2) or had more shots on target (2) than Wayne Rooney vs. the USA.

“He was persistent with it, and I literally lifted it and moved it on. What was I doing? I need to move on and go somewhere else.”
