Sophia Floersch surgery update is out

Sophia Floersch is fighting a brave battle after she met with a horrific accident during the Macau GP, with her car crashing into the bunker for photographers after it went airborne, just before the turn near the grandstand.

The video of the crash went viral on social media, as a lot of motorsport enthusiasts hadn’t seen anything of that sort for a very long time.

The crash caused Floersch, two photographers and a marshal to be rushed to the hospital, with initial news stating that Floersch had suffered spinal damage.

However, after surgery yesterday morning, it was revealed that no damage had been done to the spinal cord. Her vertebra was damaged though and there was a bone splinter  ‘dangerously’ close to her spinal cord.

While a small statement was released by Sophia’s team on twitter last night, a detailed statement has been issued by her team Van Amersfoot racing today, stating that things are going according to plan and Sophia is responding well to the surgery.

“First of all we would like to extend our sincere appreciation for all the worldwide support messages we have received since Sophia’s horrific accident in Macau last Sunday.

“As already spread in the news, Sophia came out of her surgery yesterday. It took a team of specialists over nine hours to repair her fractured vertebra and remove a bone splinter, which was sitting dangerously close to her spinal cord. Nerve monitoring shows that her vital nerve functions react well, therefore the initial signs give a positive outlook towards her recovery.” the official statement from the team read.
