WATCH: Shimron Hetmyer claims a grounded catch
Shimron Hetmyer claims a grounded catch: West Indies’ batsmen was seen claiming a grounded catch in the second Test.
During the second day of the recently concluded second Test match between Bangladesh and West Indies at Dhaka, West Indies middle-order batsman Shimron Hetmyer claimed a grounded catch in a bid to dismiss Bangladesh’s all-rounder Mahmudullah.
It happened on the fourth delivery of the 93rd over of Bangladesh’s innings on the morning of the second day when Mahmudullah’s attempt to defend a Kemar Roach delivery off the back foot saw the ball inducing the outside edge of his bat only to fall minimally short of Hetmyer at second slip.
It was on-field umpire Palliyaguruge’s soft signal of ‘not out’ which eventually saved the batsman for even the third umpire wasn’t sure of the decision. In such cases, the third umpire requires conclusive evidence to overturn the soft signal from the on-field umpire. With that missing even after several replays, the batsman was given the benefit of doubt.
The initial appeal was a one-man effort from Hetmyer, who wasn’t supported by his teammates. The West Indies’ players initially seemed to have thought of the otherwise but it was Hetmyer’s appeal which saw the umpire referring to the third umpire.
Mahmudullah, who was playing at 32 at that time, ended up scoring his third Test century, 136 (242), with the help of 10 fours. Bangladesh ended up winning the match by an innings and 184 runs, which aided them to whitewash the series 2-0.
