“I Bought Them All Rolexes”: Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson React as Amon-Ra St. Brown Gifts Prada Suits to Lions Teammates
Amon-Ra St. Brown, one of the NFL’s highest-paid wide receivers, is giving his teammates a taste of luxury. He gifted the entire Detroit Lions receiver room customized Prada suits. The gesture inspired Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson to recall the gifts they gave and received during their time in the league.
Well, there was luxury involved, especially in Sharpe’s case, who remembered giving his Denver Broncos offensive linemen Rolex watches back in 1993. This was to celebrate his first ever selection in the First-Team All-Pro. Sharpe had a clause in this contract that entitled him to a $10k bonus if he reached that milestone or the Pro Bowl.
“In 1993, I was first-team All-Pro. I was the starting Tight End for the AFC and I had a $10k if I made the Pro Bowl bonus. I went and bought Offensive Linemen, I bought them all Rolexes, stainless steel Rolexes,” revealed Sharpe.
This left Ocho speechless. Chad tried to do the math and found it hard to believe. He quickly asked what the price of Rolex was back in the 1990s. His mind was put to ease when Sharpe told him that the watch cost $2500 at the time. Rolex, nowadays, cost upward of $60k, and Johnson initially couldn’t digest Shannon would spend over a quarter of a million on watches.
Johnson, though, had a much more grounded career playing for the Cincinnati Bengals in the early 2000s. Giving or receiving lavish gifts between teammates was never the norm. Cincinnati had only one winning season in that period. And teammates only buy or exchange gifts when the team is enjoying a period of success.
Talking about success, the Lions are going through a hot streak at the moment. With a 12-2 record, they lead the NFC North. That justifies the Prada suits, priced at around $6,000-$7000 each. Brown would have dished out between $42,000 and $50,000 for his teammates.
Well, he has the money to spend too. Brown and the Lions agreed to a four-year contract extension worth more than $120 million earlier this year. That will keep the star receiver in Detroit through the 2028 season. With that kind of money, he can surely afford what would be a minor blip on his bank statement.
