Serena Williams talks about equality at her Australian Open press conference
Serena Williams wanted to leverage the Martin Luther King Day to talk about equality in her press conference at the Australian Open today.
Earlier today Serena had romped to a straight sets win against Benicic of Switzerland. She sported a T-Shirt emblazoned with word ‘Equality’, emphasizing on how she wanted to spread the word and work for equality for women in the Tennis circuit.
“With today being Martin Luther King Day, it’s important to spread the message of equality, which is something he talked about a lot and he tried to spread a lot — equality and rights for everyone,”
” A lot of athletes want to be part of this movement. And we really just want to speak up about things that we believe in and talk about equality,”
Serena has always gone on record to talk about how she will keep constantly fighting for the equality of women and everyone oppressed in general. She has never shied away from talking about it and nothing will stop her from working towards achieving her goal.
“We want to make sure we always continue to move forward and always have the opportunity to have equal rights for all.”
“We don’t want to stop that forward movement. It’s just always great to raise awareness for it.”
When asked about her views on Trump’s ascend to the Presidency in the United States and the effect it could have on the ‘equality’ movement, Williams preferred to stay mum!
“I don’t talk — I don’t have any comments on that.”
We wish her the best in her fight for equality and hope that at least the Tennis world recognizes the need for a fairer system.
