It is worth mentioning that the Indian skipper had apparently waved at the Indian fans when they were reportedly hurling their continuous chants of ‘cheater’ at the former Australian captain Steve Smith, who was stationed at the boundary rope while fielding.
Kohli, while waving (to catch the attention of the handful of Indian supporters) wanted the spectators to stop the nonsense in which they were indulging at, and instead applaud Smith for the fact that he is ready to give it all for his country after going through a difficult one-year ban period on ball tampering charges.
Virat Kohli’s asking the Indians in the Oval to applaud Steve Smith is such a great gesture. I have seen many amazing cricketers over the years. Rarely seen someone change his game and his attitude so much over a decade. He is an absolute inspiration!

In was an explicit hurtful reaction on the part of the Indian fans, and it is said that they stopped after India captain Virat Kohli told them to do so. It had become a regular routine for Steve Smith and David Warner as they were continuously booed, especially by the English Cricket fans right since the Warm-up matches of the World Cup.
Australian fans impressed
Virat Kohli, who doesn’t generally have a good reputation before the Australian Cricket fans, especially after his inappropriate non-verbal gesture towards the Sydney crowd during his debut Test series in 2012, won their hearts with an entirely opposite gesture in nature at The Oval on Sunday.
In fact the entire Cricketing fraternity ranging from fans to Cricket experts were in ‘all-praise mode’ for Virat Kohli- the leader who has matured and evolved over the years.
The 30-year-old during the post-match press conference, exclaimed the reason for his sweet gesture and even apologized on behalf of the fans for having behaved in such a manner.
“What’s happened has happened like long back, the guy is back, he’s trying to play well for his side. Even in the IPL I saw him, it’s not good to see someone down like that, to be honest. I just felt for him, and told him sorry on behalf of the crowd”, Kohli said.
“Just because there are so many Indian fans here I don’t want them to set a bad example. He didn’t do anything to be booed in my opinion. I felt for him and told him sorry on behalf of the crowd. In my opinion that’s not acceptable”, he further added.
