Eric Bischoff names AEW star he thinks could become the next John Cena in the sense that they possess the potential and ability to transcend the business.

Wrestling was at it’s peak in the Attitude Era with the Rock and Stone Cold at the helm. Following their exits, the WWE was rebuilt on John Cena’s shoulders. The 16-time World Champion, carried the company on his back for well over a decade and played a pivotal role in their growth.

Speaking on the It’s Our House Podcast, Eric Bischoff was asked which wrestler he believed would transcend the business. Bischoff first gave an example of such a star in John Cena then claimed that he saw the same ability in AEW’s Cody Rhodes.

“I think when you talk about somebody who has the potential to transcend the business, that means to become a bigger star, or at least a star outside of the wrestling business as inside of the wrestling business. That’s how John Cena became a big star. Because everywhere you looked, including WWE, but outside of WWE, you would see John Cena. He became that.

“WWE was preaching outside of the choir. And they connected with people that they weren’t connected with just on the wrestling show by using John Cena because he had that potential and ability to transcend the business in that regard. I think Cody Rhodes has the same potential.”

Cody made his Wrestling debut with the WWE. He joined their developmental in 2006 and made his RAW debut a year later. He won the tag titles on numerous occasions with them and even held the intercontinental title twice. By 2016 he asked for his release from the WWE and left for the independents.

Cody’s career has been on a rise since. He won the Ring of Honor World Championship and the IWGP United States Championship before forming AEW with Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks; where he became the innaugral TNT Champion.

Cody’s stock in the wrestling industry continues to grow at a steady pace day by day. However, he is still some distance from where Cena eventually ended up at.

Like most combat sports enthusiasts, his passion for watching people fight began with WWE when he witnessed a young Brock Lesnar massacre Hulk Hogan back in 2002. This very passion soon branched out to boxing and mixed martial arts. Over the years he fell in love with the theatrics that preceded the bell and the poetic carnage that followed after. Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all. His favorite wrestler is Shawn Michaels and he believes that GSP is the greatest to ever step foot inside the octagon. Apart from wrestling, he is also fond of poetry and music.
