Up until September’s All Out pay-per-view, CM Punk was the biggest name on the AEW roster. However, within 24 hours, he became the biggest villain for what he did on the post-show media scrum. CM Punk got into a backstage fight with The Elite which led to an indefinite suspension for all involved. Moreover, The Straight Edged Superstar reportedly tore his left tricep during All Out. Now after more than three months, some details about AEW’s initial plans for CM Punk have come out.
Before all the backstage brawls and suspensions, CM Punk was holding AEW’s World Title. And at the All Out PPV, MJF had also returned and won the Casino Ladder Match. One would easily assume that both men would have had a feuded if all things were good. Well, that’s not the case according to a recent report by Fightful Select.
AEW’s initial plans were to put CM Punk and FTR in a Trios feud after All Out
Recently, AEW President Tony Khan made an appearance on Fightful’s Grapsody podcast. On the show, Khan shed light on AEW’s plans for CM Punk before he got injured and then suspended.
According to AEW President, The Straight Edged Superstar, alongside FTR, was set for a trio run over the summer. However, the All Out injury and the backstage fight with The Elite led to his suspension. Obviously, whatever AEW’s plans were for CM Punk had to be changed.
Speaking on the podcast, Mr. Khan stated:
CM Punk and FTR were supposed to be a trio this summer.

Let’s assume nothing happened after September’s All Out pay-per-view. According to what Tony told Fightful, it seems that AEW’s plans were to put CM Punk and FTR against The Elite. All because Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks won the Trios Titles at the All Out PPV. It would have been a memorable feud but unfortunately, could not happen.
Can fans expect AEW to execute its original plans for The Stright Edged Superstar?
Well, anything is possible in the world of pro wrestling but looking at the current scenario, it’s very unlikely to happen. Since the suspensions, a lot has happened within AEW. While The Elite has made a comeback, CM Punk is still in exile. It was also reported that the AEW President chose Kenny and co. over the Straight Edged Superstar. Not forgetting, Punk was in talks for a contract buyout.
Nevertheless, it seems that AEW has finally found its way to work without The Straight Edged Superstar. And by the looks of it, one can assume CM Punk is done with the company. However, it will be interesting to see if WWE signs him after all that happened in September.
