Chelsea Team News: Frank Lampard takes call on Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James ahead of Grimsby trip

Frank Lampard has taken a huge call on the involvement of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James.

Chelsea faced defeat in the hands of Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. First-half goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino proved too hard for the hosts to script a comeback. A goal from N’Golo Kante proved only a consolation for Frank Lampard.

Currently, the Blues have plucked just eight points from opening six games in the Premier League. But, they will now shift their attention to the League Cup, which kicks off from this week.

The reigning Europa League Champions are facing a home clash against Grimsby Town, a third-tier club in England on Wednesday. While speaking to Chelsea FC TV after the defeat to Liverpool, Frank Lampard confirmed the inclusion of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James.

Hudson-Odoi, who has put pen to paper until 2024, lastly played against Burnley on 22 April, 2019. The 18-year-old winger played for the Under-23s on Saturday and could now be integrated into the first-team travelling squad for the league cup clash against Grimpsy Town on Wednesday.

On the other hand, Reece James spent a brief one-year loan spell with Wigan Athletic last campaign. The young defender picked up an ankle injury during the pre-season and will make his comeback in the league cup this Wednesday. Similar to his teammate Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James played the first half in the Premier League under23s.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is expected to return to the action soon. He could be ready after the next International break ends in October. Antonio Rudiger and Marco Van Ginkel are on the injury table, owing down to groin and knee injuries. Emerson Palmieri was taken off during the first half against Liverpool and is most likely to sit out for this league cup clash.
