Chelsea were wiped the floor with by West Brom
Unbeaten in 14 fixtures under Thomas Tuchel’s tutelage and taking on a West Brom side which had a paltry three wins all season, Chelsea were widely touted to breeze to a comfortable win on the day.
And after taking a 1-0 win lead through Christian Pulisic on the day, Chelsea looked set to get past the finishing line with ease. However, things took no time in going south for the club with the home side reduced to 10 men as Thiago Silva was dished a red card.
Tuchel Left In Anguish
Chelsea lost their way from thereon with the club slipping to a horrific 5-2 rout on the day. It was a result which left Thomas Tuchel flabbergasted with the Chelsea manager unaware of how his side had managed to make a meal of the affair.
“Everything that went wrong, went wrong, every shot from them was a goal. I didn’t see it coming. We have to take responsibility, shake it off and digest it, Tuchel said ensuing the defeat,
“We have to accept we’ll never know what happened with a different team today. It’s my responsibility and like my players I am very disappointing. We hate to lose.
“We had an excellent training session yesterday and we had the players who finished the session yesterday. I trusted the line up, it was strong enough to win the game.
“But we were rusty, sloppy. We had many unforced errors and we did not adapt well to adapt our positions under pressure. We had easy ball losses that led to the red card and that cost us the game.
“Eleven against eleven it was not our best game but it was ok and on the counter attacks we had chances. We missed opportunities to kill the game early.
“The second story is we didn’t adapt to going one-man down. Our defending wasn’t at the level we want it to be and the tactical choices for that are my responsibility. It’s hard to accept but there’s no other solution. We move on.”
