Chennai Super Kings opening batter Devon Conway put on display a laboured innings with the bat in hand in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023 Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Highest run-scorer for his team this season, Conway couldn’t get going on a sluggish pitch after visiting captain Hardik Pandya invited the hosts in to bat first.

Opening the batting with Ruturaj Gaikwad (60), Conway played second-fiddle in a 63-ball 87-run partnership for the first wicket. Conway, who hit only a couple of fours in the powerplay, scored 14* (11) whilst the fielding restrictions were on.
While the fact that the left-handed batter faced only 19 balls in the first half of their innings didn’t help the cause of a batter who wasn’t able to time the ball to perfection, him not being able to find boundaries on a regular basis adversely affected the progress made by his opening partner.
Fan Links Devon Conway With BCCI’s 500 Trees Per Dot Ball Initiative
With a lot expected out of him especially in a playoff contest, Conway scoring 40 (34) at a strike rate of 117.64 tested the patience of Super Kings’ plentiful fans for understandable reasons. The 31-year old player hitting only four fours before getting out in the 16th over enticed reactions in association with BCCI’s (Board of Control for Cricket in India) new environment-friendly initiative.
“Environment Saviour,” wrote a fan on social media platform Twitter. “Rumours suggesting that Devon Conway is invited for the ribbon cutting ceremony,” wrote another fan.
For the unversed, BCCI will plant 500 trees for each dot ball bowled during IPL 2023 playoffs. If truth be told, Conway not scoring a run off nine balls tonight wasn’t a lot for a 34-ball knock. It’s just that him not scoring adequate amount of boundaries in a big match which laid groundwork for the above mentioned sarcastic tweets.
CSK batters Ajinkya Rahane (17) and Ambati Rayudu (17) and former captain Ravindra Jadeja (22) registered impact-generating cameos to power the team to a challenging 172/7 in 20 overs on this pitch.
