IPL Auction 2021: Minimum and maximum Squad size of IPL teams; What is the minimum budget to be spent?

Squad size of IPL teams: An Indian Premier League franchise has to follow certain guidelines while participating in an IPL auction.

The auction for the 14th season of the Indian Premier League is less than a week away now. It will be on February 18 in Chennai that fortunes of many players might change for the better.

In what will be a mini-auction, a maximum of 61 out of the 292 shortlisted players will be able to find buyers. It is worth mentioning that a total of 1,114 players had registered for IPL 2021 auction which were shortlisted to 292 last night.

Unlike last year, the overall budget of franchises hasn’t increased by INR 3 crore which means that they will have to form a squad within the allowed maximum limit of INR 85 crore.

Out of the 61 available slots, 22 belong to overseas players which will see some high profile names such as Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Shakib Al Hasan, Alex Hales, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Aaron Finch, Marnus Labuschagne etc. going under the hammer.

Squad size of IPL teams

It is worth mentioning that an IPL team can have a minimum and maximum of 18 and 25 players respectively. Out of these 25 players, a maximum of eight can be overseas players.

While the maximum limit used to be 27 (with nine overseas players at the max) in the initial stages of the tournament, it is no longer the case.

What is the minimum budget to be spent in IPL auction?

Just as the maximum limit of INR 85 crore, there is also a minimum budget which the franchises have to spend to buy a minimum of 18 players. The minimum amount to be spent is 75% of the overall purse, i.e., INR 63.75 crore when the budget is INR 85 crore.

If a franchise manages to buy 18 players below the minimum limit of INR 63.75 crore and doesn’t bids for any other players, BCCI will take away a certain amount (INR 63.75 crore – Amount spent by the franchise) from them.
