Australian cricket has been full of superstars, and Andrew Symonds is one of the shining lights among them. The all-rounder left the world earlier this year leaving the cricketing fraternity in shock. Symonds’ achieved some huge success in his playing days, but he was always surrounded by controversies.

The all-rounder passed away earlier this year in a car crash leaving behind a family of three, his wife and two children. Symonds was born in the UK, but he never saw his original parents. He was then adopted by an English pair, and they took him to Australia when he was just three.

Symonds was said to be one of the lethal all-rounders of Australian cricket. He scored 5088 ODI runs at 39.44 and 1462 test runs at 40.61 where he scored 8 international centuries. Symonds also scalped 165 wickets in international cricket. The ability of Symonds to score quick runs and take wickets made him a match-winner.

Andrew Symonds’ career was full of controversies, and one incident happened in 2009 for which he was fined A$4000. Symonds was doing a radio interview in which he called former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, a piece of sh*t. This behavior was against the policies, and he was found guilty of “detrimental public comment”.

However, Cricket Australia did not impose any further ban on the all-rounder. Later on, Symonds clarified that his comments were not meant for McCullum, but for New South Wales. Actually, New South Wales played McCullum in a T20 final to make him eligible to play in the Champions League for them later that year in India.

Symonds was furious over the fact that an Australian-born player was dropped from the squad unfairly. He later thanked McCullum as well for understanding his statements and he also apologized for the same.

“I want to again apologise to Brendon McCullum for my comments and thank him for his understanding. I want to reinforce that I remain committed to Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket,” Andrew Symonds said as quoted by The Guardian.

McCullum is currently the head coach of England’s test team, and the English team has prospered under his coaching. He was the head coach of IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
