The UEFA Nations League recommenced as Portugal took on Switzerland in front of their home crowd. Portugal have more quality comparatively, but the Swiss also have enough quality stacked up in all departments to cause trouble.
It has been an even game till Cristiano Ronaldo scored an exquisite free kick from outside the box to hand over the lead to Portugal. The Skipper was fouled outside the box when Xhaka clattered into him despite Kevin Mbabu’s grit to win possession by tracking back. It was an unnecessary foul which came back to haunt the Swiss Skipper.
Ronaldo read the situation to perfection to see the net bulge. The 34-year-old spotted that one part of the wall was not jumping to cut down the threat underneath. Reading that, he decided to hit the ball over the head of the defender who failed to jump. Despite achieving that, the ball had enough swivel to beat the goalkeeper Yan Sommer.
The shot-stopper had no chance as he was not able to react instantly. He was not able to spot that at the time and watched the ball hit the back of the net.
