It was one of those comebacks for United which the fans have always related the club with. After being down 2-0 in the first half, Mourinho inspired his men to terrific comeback to seal the match 3-2.

Manchester United conceded two early goals due to extremely sloppy defending from Ashley Young, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly. Mourinho was forced to make an attacking change, bringing Juan Mata on for Bailly in the 18th minute.

Jose Mourinho’s side continued to push for a goal in the first half, but failed. But United players emerged from the Old Trafford tunnel in the second half with an attacking intent, and Mourinho committed wholly to attack.

United attacked the Newcastle defence, and ultimate got the breakthrough with a Juan Mata free-kick. Anthony Martial soon equalized with a stunning backheel pass from Paul Pogba, who was central to United’s comeback. Alexis Sanchez’s header in the 90th minute sealed the game.

Jose Mourinho on Manchester United win:

United manager Jose Mourinho’s intense passion was transferred into the players against Newcastle, as the ‘Red Devils’ completed a terrific comeback.

Mourinho spoke about the win during the post-match interview. He insisted that the players proved in the second half that they play for this club.

“As I used to say nobody is important, only the club. It is not about me or the players. It is about the club. In the second half the players gave absolutely everything, they had nothing more to give,” said Mourinho.

“It’s not the substitutions, it’s the mentality, it’s the desire, it’s the commitment…nobody is important, the club is important, it’s not about me or the players it’s about the club.”

He also talked about the relentless media coverage on his future.

“I am 55 years old and this is the first time in full I see a manhunt. I am 55. I am mature. I can cope with it. I can live with it. I think the players are not coping with it.

“I go to London tonight, if it rains in London tomorrow, it’s my fault. If there is a problem with Brexit, it’s my fault.”

He insisted that Marcus Rashford was frustrated with his performance, and that Scott McTominay was ‘scared.’

“Marcus Rashford was sad on the pitch McTominay was scared…and the players made mistakes on the pitch that are not normal.”

Juan Mata on the win:

Manchester United’s first goal-scorer of the match, Juan Mata also spoke on the scintillating comeback.

“We needed something like that. It was very difficult to come back but we created more chances than we scored. We gave everything we had to win and in the second half we felt we had nothing to lose, and it is natural to create more when that happens.

“It is relief and we feel that we got what we needed. In football, results fix everything. In the second half we tried especially for the fans, and tonight they go home happy.”
