2 Years After Throwing Hands on LeBron James, Detroit Pistons’ Player Signs $64,000,000 Contract
Usually, when players face off against LeBron James and perform exceptionally well, they are rewarded with lucrative contracts. However, in an unusual turn of events, Isaiah Stewart of the Detroit Pistons secured a staggering $64,000,000 contract just 2 years after engaging in a different kind of interaction with James. This remarkable deal comes as a testament to Stewart’s growth and development as a player, despite their on-court physical altercation during a Pistons-Lakers game in 2021.
LeBron James is renowned for being a pillar of calm and consistency on the basketball court. However, his clash with Isaiah Stewart revealed a different side to the King. The incident occurred on November 21, 2021, during a game at Little Caesars Arena when the Detroit Pistons hosted the reigning NBA champions, the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers, who were struggling with a below-average record, entered the game with high hopes.
The Altercation with LeBron James and Isaiah Stewart’s Rise to a $64M Contract
Early in the third quarter, as Jerami Grant lined up for free throws, LeBron James and Isaiah Stewart battled for a rebound, attempting to gain position. Regrettably, James’s aggression led to an elbow striking Stewart’s face. The Pistons’ center was visibly displeased and promptly retaliated by shoving the four-time NBA champion. Fortunately, their teammates intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further.
Despite the efforts of his teammates to restrain him, Stewart attempted to break free and confront James. However, the court was crowded, impeding his progress and ultimately halting his pursuit. Both players were subsequently ejected from the game, with Stewart ending the night with four points and James departing with 10 points and five assists.
Isaiah Stewart’s fury stemmed from his belief that LeBron James intentionally struck him.
“I watched the film,” the Pistons’ big man stated. “I didn’t feel like it was an accident.”
LeBron James acknowledged that the referees made the correct call by ejecting both players. Despite the clash, Stewart has since displayed tremendous growth and potential as a player, catching the attention of the Pistons’ management.
As a result, Stewart recently agreed to a four-year, $64 million rookie contract extension, solidifying his future with the team. This contract marks the first non-maximum extension within the 2020 draft class.

NBA Hands Out Suspensions to LeBron James and Isaiah Stewart
The NBA responded swiftly to the altercation. They imposed a two-game suspension on Stewart for his attempt to escalate the conflict. Additionally, they imposed a one-game suspension on LeBron James. While the punishments served as a reminder of the league’s commitment to upholding sportsmanship, they did not hinder Stewart’s progress.
Following the altercation, LeBron expressed his thoughts. James, known for his composed demeanor, acknowledged that the referees made the right decision to eject both players. However, he voiced his disagreement with his one-game suspension.
At a post-game presser after the LA Clippers vs. Detroit Pistons game that same year, Isaiah Stewart voiced his opinion on the altercation, saying, “I’m not going to let that define who I am. I’m going to let what Detroit drafted me for define who I am and the way I play basketball.”
In the end, the altercation and subsequent suspensions served as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and maintaining a respectful environment in the NBA. The league’s response allowed for reflection and served as a learning moment for all involved, emphasizing the significance of fair play and mutual respect on the basketball court.
