Dwyane Wade's 'Tight-Fisted' Evaluation of Jimmy Butler's Taylor Swift Performance Once Drew Parallels with 2020 Dunk Contest Controversy

Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler forged a special bond during one year at the Chicago Bulls. The 2016-17 campaign was indeed a horrorshow for the Bulls, exiting the playoffs in the first round after qualifying as the eighth seed. However, even in these tumultuous times, Butler and Wade stayed on the same page and formed an incredible friendship. The duo stood united even during a dressing room fracture at the Bulls’ locker room. The friendship between Butler and Dwyane Wade transcends beyond basketball, as they are often seen hanging around or vacationing together.

On the TNT  Tuesday Postgame Show from February 17, 2021, Dwyane Wade was judging Jimmy Butler’s dance moves in the locker room. The video saw Butler dancing to Taylor Swift’s song ’22,’ with Shaq and Dwyane Wade being asked to rate out of 10. While Shaq seemed impressed by Jimmy’s footwork, rating the performance a 10, Wade didn’t seem very impressed, only giving Jimmy a 9.

This incident could remind some fans of the infamous 2020 All-Star Slam Dunk contest. Aaron Gordon, the top contender in that contest, had to return empty-handed because of Dwyane Wade’s rating. The award for the best dunk was eventually handed to Gordon’s competitor, Derrick Jones Jr.

Dwyane Wade rates Jimmy Butler’s locker room dance

In this TNT Tuesday Postgame Show clip, a video of Jimmy Butler resurfaced, singing and dancing to Taylor Swift’s song ’22.’ Dwyane Wade and Shaq were tasked with rating the dance out of ten. Shaq seemed to love Jimmy’s moves in the dressing room. He rated Butler 10/10, while further complimenting the Heat superstar:

“I’m gonna give him a 10. The foot work was nice, the rythm was nice. He even put his shirt on in the middle of it. So, I’mma give you 10, Jimmy boy.”

Dwyane Wade, however, seemed slightly critical of Butler’s dance moves. Rating the video, Dwyane Wade says, “I would give that out of nine.”  To this, Jimmy Butler responded:

“Yeah, you would. Yeah, you would!”

This directly compares to Dwyane Wade rating the All-Star Slam Dunk Contest in 2020. The competition featured Aaron Gordon from Orlando Magic against Derrick Jones Jr. While Gordon was expected to be the contest winner, Wade voting him 9/10 changed the course of the event. It gave Jones a slight edge against Gordon, with the Orlando Star returning back empty-handed.

When the show hosts ask Jimmy if Dwyane would have brought up this incident, he replied:

” Cause truthfully, I really don’t think that he cares. Like, it is what it is.”

Surely, this would imply that Dwyane Wade is generally critical of everything around him. Perhaps 9 out of 10 would be a good score for his range. While Jimmy is used to Wade’s ratings, the former Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls star had to clear the air between him and Aaron Gordon to justify his rating in the Slam Dunk contest.

Dwyane Wade explained on Instagram Live why he rated Aaron Gordon 9 out of 10

On May 2020, Dwyane Wade appeared live on Instagram to clear the air between him and Aaron Gordon. As it might be clear from the case of Jimmy Butler’s dance video, Wade might be objectively critical of everything around him. Speaking to Gordon, he says,

“We didn’t feel you lost the dunk contest overall. It was about the dunk”

Wade further explained the situation by suggesting a viable solution. A one-on-one dunk-off, similar to how Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have done in golf. ‘The Match,’ could be held to settle the issue. This re-do, however, hasn’t occured yet.
