Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Documentary on Immigrant Flagmakers Miss out on Oscar Nominations
Giannis Antetokounmpo might be happy that his Milwaukee team is back to full health for the first time this season. However, he will be carrying a heavy heart knowing that his movie didn’t get the Oscar nod.
Giannis apart from dominating the paint is also a film enthusiast. He has his own movie, Rise, which documents the story of his upbringing in the streets of Athens, Greece.
Apart from that he also has a hand in a critically acclaimed documentary that chronicles the tales of immigrants. Ones who are responsible for making the flags of the USA.
The contrasting nature of the movie is what made it so popular among critics and there was a belief that it would get an Oscar nod.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s The Flagmakers gets Oscars snub
Alas, The Flagmakers did not get nominated for the Academy Awards. It was believed that the movie would get a nomination for the short documentary feature, however, things didn’t turn out that way.
Giannis talked highly of the movie and even had this to say,
“As an immigrant myself, I find this film incredibly personal and a deeply moving testament to those who call this country ‘home.’ Each one of these inspiring individuals have (has) overcome adversity and challenges in their lives and bring those unique experiences and stories as they craft the American flag.”
The disappointment is real and while Giannis might not even acknowledge it publically, we know how it feels. He himself was a refugee in Greece. The story feels too awfully close to home.
The Milwaukee Bucks are delighted that Giannis Antetokounmpo is back
The Bucks have been on a see-saw of sorts. Some great spurts of form followed by a string of disappointing wins. Giannis himself was out for a few games.
However, the team is back at full strength. Khris Middleton is also getting regular minutes. And the team is going from strength to strength.
They put 150 points against the Piston just 2 nights ago. They face Nikola Jokic and the best team in the west, the Nuggets tonight. A tough test, but a victory would mean they are on the right track.
