'Kyrie Irving believes the earth is flat': Basketball Reference adds a hilarious new nickname for Nets star

Kyrie Irving has now acquired a new nickname for the upcoming NBA season – World B Flat – listed on Basketball Reference.

The Nets star made his startling claim about the earth being flat for the first time in public nearly 4 years ago. This was on JJ Redick’s podcast in early 2017. The occasion arose when Irving was speaking about people not getting off their hivemind, and can believe anything they’re told.

According to Kyrie, people didn’t do nearly enough research about things they think they know. He then went off on a hyperbole, claiming the earth is flat at the end of his reverie.

What the nickname means to Kyrie Irving and his fans

While Basketball Reference has only added this nickname recently, the name itself is a bit old. A Cavs fan gave him that name back when he was still with the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

Kyrie has stated on record several times after the podcast that he regrets his words. He has also stated that he is wrong, and that the earth really is round. Irving even received a gift from Jimmy Kimmel following an appearance on his show during All Star weekend 2018.

The fact of the matter is, the man isn’t exactly affected by his public image. He has acted weird off the court for a number of years now, and people have begun to get used to his eccentricities. This nickname, if anything, is just another way to bring him deeper into the pop culture conscious.
