“LeBron James must shut up and dribble but Drew Brees is fine?”: Difference in treatment between Lakers star and Saints legend illustrates subtle racism in USA
LeBron James was told to shut up and dribble while Drew Bress was protected after criticizing those who knelt during the National Anthem.
Laura Ingraham is a popular conservative television host who hosts the ‘Ingraham Angle’ on Fox News. Being a staunch Trump supporter it should come as no surprise that she went after Lebron James. However, her mild reaction towards Drew Brees is what got everyone’s attention.
On one hand, LeBron James and Kevin Durant had spoken about their experiences as black athletes. While on the other hand, Drew Brees proclaimed that it is disrespectful to kneel before the flag.
LeBron James is well known for his social justice initiatives that have helped uplift the black community. Additionally, he has utilized his platform as a superstar to speak out against racism. Drew Brees became a Fox favorite due to the fact that he fits the image of a conservative Christian athlete.

The Saints quarterback has appeared in promotional videos for events hosted by ‘Focus on the Family.’ The conservative Christian organization has received backlash for its controversial views on the LGBT community.
Laura Ingraham is the tip of the iceberg for America’s race issues
LeBron James is one of the many athletes that have utilized their platform to benefit society. Recently, several NBA stars had taken to the streets to protest police brutality in America. Leagues across the globe have also begun expressing their solidarity towards these movements. However, there is still a long way to go.
Despite these efforts, racist fans have been boycotting leagues and hurling abuses at players who support such movements. Many leagues have seen a drop in ratings due to this. Therefore, it is unclear as to how long leagues can support these movements before they start affecting them financially.
There is, however, a glimmer of hope in this gloomy story. Donald Trump has been voted out of office, thanks in part to the herculean efforts made by black athletes to mobilize voters across America. Hopefully, a Joe Biden presidency will be what America needs to fight its centuries-long issue with racism.
