"Michael Jordan, then Kobe Bryant and LeBron James as I grew up": Blake Griffin reveals why his idols, then why he joined Brooklyn Nets in first interview with the franchise

Blake Griffin signed with the Brooklyn Nets as a free agent on All-Star Sunday. He gave his first interview with the team on a Bleacher Report AMA.

The Griffin signing has become a major talking point for many fans. Some believe that he dogged it in Detroit to make sure of his waiver. Others believe that he’s truly past it now, going on 32 years of age.

Griffin teaming up with the Nets’ Big 3 is a pretty low-risk bet for the latter. For starters, they have 2 conventional rotation bigs in Nic Claxton and DeAndre Jordan, who’ll undoubtedly see a lot of floor time.

They also have Jeff Green, who is likely to be the center in their closing lineups from here on out. This means that there is precious little playing time for another big man as is. Griffin is unlikely to steal too many minutes from any of these 3, if his performances this year are any indication.

Griffin had the following response when asked about why he chose the Nets over other teams competing for his signature:

“They have a need for a four-man (power forward). I’ve always had a lot of respect for Steve Nash and all of the guys that they have. Sean Marks has done great job there. It was a tough decision and I wanted to be on a team that was contending.”

He also revealed who he idolized as players before entering the league:

“Michael Jordan. I was a big Vince Carter fan and then when I got a little bit older LeBron, Kobe.”

Blake will be hoping to finally get his hands on the trophy that has eluded him all these years. One would hope that he gets the playing time that he’s been fighting for so desperately.
