Making $112 Million For Every $100,000 Invested, ‘Beginner’ Shaquille O’Neal Once Forgot About His Investment In $2 Trillion Company

In 2004, the Eastern Conference made way for the arrival of one of the greatest players of all time. Shaquille O’Neal was traded to the Miami Heat, turning the East, as he claimed, into a “media Mecca”. It was a blockbuster trade that came with a blockbuster contract for Big Diesel. The Heat offered Shaq a massive $101,000,000 deal. And, as Sports Illustrated revealed, it was worth every penny seeing as Miami had a lot of No. 32 jersey sales thanks to the deal.

Shaq was hailed as the “Messiah” for Miami. And, while he wasn’t exactly in his prime and while they did give up a lot for him, he proved to be the missing piece of the puzzle for the Heat. After all, an NBA championship in exchange for  Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, and Brian Grant is a great deal.

The Miami Heat sold 400 jerseys in two hours upon the arrival of Shaquille O’Neal

The arrival of Shaquille O’Neal in Miami was heralded as one of the biggest moves in NBA history. Shaq was a force to be reckoned with, and although Father Time was catching up with him, he still was a formidable player. In addition, he was one that fit perfectly with the Heat’s roster.

However, the fit wasn’t just limited to what he offered on the court. Shaq was and still is an icon, both in the world of sports and in pop culture. Bringing him to a big market city like Miami was bound to be a major success, especially financially. And, so it was.

As soon as O’Neal’s No.32 jersey went up online for sale on the Heat website orders came rushing in. In fact, the Heat sold close to 400 of The Big Aristotle’s jerseys in two hours. This is a testament to just how impactful his presence was. One that is further highlighted by how well he performed with the team.

“There’s no denying the impact O’Neal will have in Miami. Some 400 number 32 jerseys were ordered from the Heat’s website in the first two hours they were available.”

It truly is amazing just what Shaq brought with him. All this before Facebook took over the world and he established his incredible social media presence. A walking bucket through and through, both on and off the court.

Shaq’s arrival saw Pat Riley compare ticket sales at the American Airlines Arena to the New York Stock Exchange

Shaquille O’Neal’s move to Miami affected everything around him. And while his amazing jersey sales are something to marvel at, it wasn’t the only thing trading for him brought. To hear Pat Riley say, ticket sales skyrocketed upon his arrival. So much so that the American Airlines Arena felt like a floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

The move also ultimately paid off on the court as well, as Shaq was integral in helping deliver the Heat its first championship playing behind Dwyane Wade.

“Team president Pat Riley likened the ticket-selling scene at American Airlines Arena last week to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.”

All in all, Shaq’s time in Miami was fruitful. He spent close to four seasons in South Beach and his presence drove Miami to greater success.
