Stephen Curry Once Awkwardly Answered the Strangest Question About Friends Swooning Over Mother Sonya: “My Pops Lucked Out”
Back in 2016, Golden State Warriors legend Stephen Curry gave an interview to Access Hollywood. Among a series of personal questions that he was asked, Curry was also quizzed about his mother Sonya Curry. Sonya is an educator and former volleyball player. She married former NBA player Dell Curry in 1988, and the pair separated in 2020.
During the interview, Stephen Curry was asked about how it was living with a “hot mom.” In response, Curry awkwardly revealed that he knew his father had lucked out.
Stephen Curry was once asked an awkward question about his mother
The interview had little to do with Stephen Curry’s NBA career. He was yet to win his first championship but had already been recognized as one of the best shooters the league had ever seen.
Speaking to Access Hollywood, he was also asked about his experience related to having an “attractive mother.” Steph gave a characteristically awkward response.
Curry seemed visibly awkward and rightfully so, considering the nature of the question. The 4-time champion also said that his friends knew not to talk about his mother when they came over. He also joked about getting his looks from his mother:
“She looks just like where I got my looks from. Yeah, I knew my pops, he lucked out. You know what they say about me, I got discovered. But whenever my friends would come over growing up, they know not to talk about my mom.”
Stephen Curry’s parents ended up separating in 2020
Dell Curry played in the NBA from 1986 to 2002. He retired as the leading scorer in the history of the Charlotte Hornets. He met Steph’s mother back in college.
The two were high school sweethearts and married in 1988, two years after Dell was selected by the Utah Jazz in the 1986 draft. Dell Curry also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Toronto Raptors.
After spending Curry’s entire childhood as a couple, things did not end on the best of notes for Dell and Sonya. The two separated in 2020 after both accused each other of cheating during their marriage. In June 2021, Sonya filed for divorce and the two continue to be on friendly terms.
The Warriors’ superstar had claimed in an interview with People that Sonya had made innumerable sacrifices for him and his father, and the divorce had proved “challenging” for him as well.
