“Steve Nash used to back into players and draw fouls too”: Trae Young claps back at Kyrie Irving's Nets head coach for ‘that’s not basketball’ comment

Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young responds to Steve Nash for comments on the former’s playstyle ‘not resembling basketball’.

The free throw has become a potent weapon in this modern day NBA. Perhaps popularized by Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, a player’s ability to get to the charity stripe at will was feared. Reaching the free throw line not only puts points on the board, but can also be used to target certain players on the floor to put them in foul trouble.

Atlanta Hawks star point guard Trae Young is starting to master the art of drawing fouls by using a sort of unconventional technique. Once he gets past his man on the perimeter, if the lane is clogged, instead of passing out for an open 3, he backs into the defender to draw a foul.

Referees call this in favour of Trae Young nearly every single time. In a game against the Brooklyn Nets, Steve Nash was livid that this was called a foul. After the game, he said, “it’s not basketball.”

Growing up, Trae’s favorite NBA player was in fact the Suns legend himself, Steve Nash. So it must’ve stung when his childhood icon took shots his game. Young didn’t back down however as he clapped back at the Nets head coach and said:

“If he says it’s not basketball, he must’ve been saying it about himself. He’s done it a couple of times throughout his career and was so successful.”

The All-Star then proceeded to drop 38 points while shooting an all too familiar 19 free throws, making 13 of them. He led the Hawks to an OT victory against the Pistons. What’s ironic about this is that Steve Nash now coaches perhaps the ‘GOAT’ at drawing fouls, James Harden.

Harden even using techniques similar to Trae Young’s to get to the charity stripe. It will be interesting to see if Nash will preach the same philosophy about drawing cheap fouls to James Harden.
