2020 NFL Rankings: Top 10 safeties for the 2020 season

Top Safeties in NFL 2020: Ranking the top 10 safeties in the league, and breaking down the top 3, as we head into the 2020 NFL season.

#1. Tyrann Mathieu

Team: Kansas City Chiefs

The honey badger has dominated the position for the last 7 years. After a rough patch of being let go by the Cardinals and Texans, Mathieu won his first super bowl last year.

Not only did he win the big game, but he was a huge part of the Chiefs’ success. His versatility, experience, and athleticism sets him apart from the pack, making him the best safety in the NFL.

#2. Harrison Smith

Team: Minnesota Vikings

Like Mathieu, Smith has an abundance of experience. He was drafted in the first round by Minnesota in 2012, and he has been dominating the league since. Known for his hard hits and interceptions, Smith is a scary sight for NFL offenses.

PFF clearly ranks Smith highly as does anyone who’s seen him play. He is currently 3rd on their list for safeties, but in 2018 he was ranked the 3rd best player in the entire league. He’s now 31 years old, but shows no signs of slowing down.

#3. Jamal Adams

Team: Seattle Seahawks

One of the biggest stories of the offseason. Adams finally got the trade he wanted and the Cowboys got curbed again.

Adams, 24, is young and hungry. The former 7th round pick quickly established himself as one of the best in the position, earning 2 Pro Bowl and All Pro selections in his 3 years in the league. He also racked up 273 combined tackles and 25 pass deflections since 2017.

Just as a reminder: he did all of this while playing for Jets. No disrespect to the Jets, but Adams himself clearly wanted out. Now that he has joined a contender and will play under Pete Carroll, there’s no telling what he can accomplish.

When we look back at the top safeties in 2020 when the season is over, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Adams at #1.
