Chris Evans Nearly "Cut Ties" With Tom Brady Over His Controversial Donald Trump Support In 2019

Tom Brady has several Hollywood pals including Chris Evans. However, in 2019, Chris Evans revealed that he was very close to cutting ties with the quarterback for his support of Donald Trump. Brady and Trump appeared to be good friends leading up to the 2019 Chris Evans interview. However, Brady believes that his relationship with Trump was always mischaracterized and that people made it out to be more than it actually was.

Brady used to receive MAGA hats from Trump, and the former president would regularly attend Patriots games, giving people the implication that there was a strong relationship there. However, Brady’s also told Variety in the past that he is no longer in touch with the former president. Of course, any relationship with the former president is controversial considering his social and political stances, and that’s why Chris Evans felt like he might have to stop his friendship with Brady.

Chris Evans explains why he didn’t want to be friends with Tom Brady

In a 2019 interview with Hollywood Reporter, Chris Evans dove deeper into why he considered Brady’s relationship to be hanging by a thread, primarily focused on how he hoped Brady wasn’t an avid supporter of Trump.

Evans was asked if he would ever play Tom Brady if a biopic were to be made of the legendary quarterback, and Chris Evans was firm to say that he would only if certain conditions were met.

From the interview,

“I don’t know. I really hope he’s not a Trump supporter. I’m just hoping he’s one of those guys that maybe supported him and now regrets it. Maybe he thought it was going to be different — and even that bothers me — but maybe there’s a chance now he just thinks Trump’s an absolute dumb sh*t, which he is. If he doesn’t, if he’s still on that Trump train, I might have to cut ties. It’s really tough. I think maybe a couple of years ago, I might have tried to pull some, like, mental gymnastics to compartmentalize, but I don’t know if I can anymore. So I’m just hoping he’s woken up.”

Clearly, Evans isn’t holding a grudge against Brady or something like that. He still believed in their friendship and hoped that Brady could change for the good of everyone involved.

For Evans, politics matters too, and he was just trying to ensure that the people he represented and were friends with, held the same ideological perspectives as him.

It’s interesting to think of all the different political perspectives that float around athletes, and clearly, even at that level, it can still affect friendships and relationships, no matter what position someone is in.

Chris Evans once helped defend Brady against Deflategate claims

Evans has been a long-time friend of Brady and a major fan of the New England Patriots. Evans is from Boston, Massachusetts, so it adds up that he would support the Pats.

Back in 2015, when the Deflategate scandal broke out, Evans came to his friend’s side in a hilarious skit on Jimmy Kimmel’s live show. Helped by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and several other Hollywood stars, Evans tried to take the blame off Brady.

It’s absolutely hilarious to see these celebrities come together in such a way, and it further speaks to just how much Chris Evans liked Tom Brady. Being a Patriots fan meant that Brady was everything to you, and Chris Evans certainly felt no different.
