The long-awaited and much-anticipated Christmas gift has finally arrived for the Denver Broncos fans, though it is a few days late. Neatly covered in wrapping paper, the fans received the news of head coach Nathaniel Hackett getting sacked earlier today. This comes in the wake of a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams, a 37-point historic loss.

Broncos fans have been clamoring for Hackett’s firing since September. While his hiring brought much pomp and joy amongst the Denver faithful, that soon turned into despair as Hackett proved unable to mold a winning offensive line. Especially after his success with the Green Bay Packers, many predicted he would do wonders with Russell Wilson. Alas, that has not been the case.
The Broncos’ offense has scored the lowest points of all teams this season, managing only an average of 15.5 points per game. They also have the lowest third-down conversion rate this season. Hackett’s career with the Broncos only lasted 15 games, putting him 7th on the list of shortest head coach tenures. Senior assistant coach Jerry Rosburg is set to take the reins as interim manager for the rest of this season.

Fans are intrigued by a curious fact in the aftermath of firing Nathaniel Hackett
While many Broncos fans are jubilant about the news of Hackett’s departure, there are a few others on Twitter who’ve chosen to focus on a rather grim picture that they’ve dug out. Journalist Jason Whitlock took to Twitter right after Hackett’s news broke out, and posted a list of short tenures in the NFL, with the caption “NFL has no patience with these black head coaches. Very racist.”
As expected, it created a rift in the comments section. While some agree that this is the case, some others vehemently oppose such declarations and call Whitlock out for pulling out the race card. Some others just don’t believe Whitlock is being serious enough to make this a race issue.

100% race baiting. You'll soon see all the people who agree with his stance will look nothing like him. He caters to that crowd. It's sad because he used to be a decent sports talking head.

Maybe part of why they have a tougher time getting jobs is that a team firing them after 13 games would get absolutely eviscerated by the public. So it’s not worth the risk of ending up in a scenario where you want to fire someone quickly but can’t due to public backlash.

This is sarcasm, right? Or a joke, right?

Not sure why them quitting or getting fired has anything to do with race? Jason I enjoy listening to you and I believe most of the time I watch you on TV and totally agree with your comments but not sure why you making their failures about race

While it is very hard to ascertain if Whitlock is trying to make a joke here, or if he’s serious, the Broncos management will not be laughing yet. Hackett’s firing brings about the beginning of an extensive search for the right coach. A coach willing to work on this broken offense. Someone willing to mold Russell Wilson into the perfect QB for Denver.
With Wilson’s performance taking a sharp hit this season, any manager worth their money would not want to start him. Regardless, the new coach will be under immense pressure to not just play Wilson, but make him the star man of the offense. That’s what happens if you shell out a $245 million contract on a sub-par quarterback.
With only a couple of weeks left in the regular season, the Broncos are not expected to make an announcement anytime soon. The off-season will be crucial for the Broncos, as by that time, their new manager should have settled in nicely. If they get one by then, that is. Who will we see take the reins at the Broncos?
