Fans of the Los Angeles Rams will be disappointed and sad about not getting a shot to defend their Super Bowl title this year. However, they’ll all be heaving a collective sigh of relief after this piece of news. Quarterback Matthew Stafford, who was injured for most of this season, has announced his intentions to stay with the Rams, and have more participation next season.

Talking about next season, he says, “I’m heading into the offseason, got a chance to be pretty darn healthy. And continue to try to get to feeling as good as I can feel. And then get ready to go again next year”. He adds that the thought of retiring from the NFL never crossed his mind during the recovery period from all his injuries.

“I got a family, I got kids, I got a wife that are obviously very, very important to me,” Stafford says. “So it’s conversations, but feel really confident that I’ll be good to go next year, be ready to go, and got full support from them, which is what matters for me.”

Matthew Stafford eyes a healthy return as Sean McVay still deciding on staying

While Stafford is confident about his future with the Rams, the same cannot be said for head coach Sean McVay. With a disappointing 5-12 record this season behind him, he announced last Monday that he will take some time to think about his future. “Don’t want to rush into any sort of decision. There’s a lot of emotion right after the season… There’s a lot of people that it does affect that I don’t take lightly,” he says.

Stafford, though, is confident he’ll stay regardless of McVay’s decision. He says, “He’ll take some time to figure what is best for him and what’s best for this program, this team moving forward and we’ll support him whatever he wants to do.”

Though Stafford only played 9 games this season, he has a career-high 68% pass completion percentage. He has also managed to bank 2,087 yards, and 10 touchdowns, with 8 interceptions. His first stint with injury came in Week 9. When he was placed in concussion protocol just 3 days after their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He cleared the protocol by week 11, to return to play for the Rams.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans for him. In the Rams’ Week 11 game against the New Orleans Saints, he re-entered concussion protocol. In addition, he suffered a spinal contusion injury, which effectively ended his season. However, recovery has been looking good for him, and he hopes to have a much better off-season period. Will Stafford’s return mark the beginning of another Rams’ Super Bowl Charge?
