PewDiePie stops accepting donations on his Stream like Pokimane & Disguised Toast before him. But what exactly led the world’s largest YouTuber to this?
PewDiePie stops accepting donations: Part of an ongoing current.
In a move which will be considered ground-breaking, PewDiePie announced that he’ll stop accepting donations on his stream. “…if someone gave me money on the Street, I’ll be like, WTF no I’m not gonna take that! …I don’t get it, it just makes no sense”, Pewds said. As his comments prove, the major problem Pewds has is with the ethics of the whole affair. And this falls directly in line with what Pokimane & Disguised Toast did recently.
Their reasons as well were very much ethical. Pokimane, especially, having suffered from much controversy on account of donations, decided to take a stand as well. And although she did not stop accepting them altogether, she put a very modest cap of $5. In her opinion, the money her viewers donate to her would be better spent elsewhere.
worked with @streamlabs to create a donation cap of $5 for my channel!
Thank you for supporting me to the point where I consider anything more than that unnecessary. To anyone that was more generous- please support growing channels, charities, and treat yourselves.❤️😊 pic.twitter.com/QhrusbDFxD

Disguised Toast went a step further a year ago & like Pewds, stopped accepting donations altogether. Donating them to charity would be much better, he said, “I’m rich already Woohooo!”.
Decided to remove Donations/Bits from my channel.
Always feel bad when I end the stream and realize I didn’t acknowledge someone’s dono because I got too focused on the game.
Give your money to charity or a smaller streamer instead, SINCE I’M RICH ALREADY WOOOHOO!

Now, any reasonable person would consider all of these steps very heartwarming. However, for some reason, Pokimane received heavy backlash when she took her stand. So, it won’t be surprising if some viewers manage to find a negative angle on Pewds as well.
Toxicity is not new to Twitch or social media. xQc also spoke out against it when Pokimane faced her backlash. “Every time one creator does something good… they say, holy shit, the others ones not doing it, they’re bad”.
xQc’s take on Pokimane setting a custom donation cap
“every time one creator does something good, for some reason.. Everybody, instead of saying “oh that’s good” they say “holy shit all the other ones not doing it, they’re bad” – and that’s a really odd way of thinking” https://t.co/DoAMpw9nMm pic.twitter.com/ZQrutFvYxk

Pewds himself also highlighted how what he had decided to do was a perfectly personal decision. He had no problems or objections to other streamers who did not follow suit. “I’m not judging other people doing it (accepting donations). I’m just saying from my perspective, it doesn’t make sense. So, I’m not accepting it. I don’t think I need it”, Pewds said.
Pewds is not new to such benchmark-setting moves. He has often shone as a trendsetting figure. So, we should not expect him to care much for haters. Neither will it be a surprise if other major Streamers jump on this “no dono train”.
