Cheteshwar Pujara to receive hike in salary

Cheteshwar Pujara to receive hike in salary: The Indian batsman might get a better annual contract after his performance in Australia.

If reports are to be believed, India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara might receive a hike in his salary after his stellar performance in the Test series against Australia in Australia. Pujara has scored three centuries in four Tests so far to become the backbone of the Indian team.

The 30-year old right-hand batsman is currently in the ‘A’ category of Indian cricketers’ annual contract. Players who represent India in all forms fall in a higher (A+) category. The other two categories are ‘B’ and ‘C’.

Playing falling in the topmost category receive an annual contract of INR 7 crore. The others receive INR 5, 3 and 1 crore respectively. While Pujara currently receives INR 5 crore annually, it might just change to INR 7 crore in the times to come.

“Pujara’s brilliant performance deserves recognition. The CoA chief will discuss with the team management and the chief selector to check if the rule for all-format specialists in the top bracket can be relaxed,” the New Indian Express cited agencies as quoting a senior BCCI official on the condition of anonymity.

If the same happens, it will go down as a step in the right direction from the Board of Control for Cricket in India for it is vital to take such measures the promote Test cricket among the youngsters. In the contemporary world of opulent T20 leagues, cricket’s ancestral format and the players playing it should not lack behind on the financial front.

With an innings still remaining in the series, Pujara has scored 521 runs at an average of 74.42 and a strike rate of 41.41. Having broken numerous batting records in this series, Pujara is also the highest run-scorer among both the teams.
