During a fourth round match of the ongoing season of the Ranji Trophy between Punjab and Delhi in Mohali, Punjab opening batsman Shubman Gill reportedly abused umpire Paschim Pathak after being wrongly given out caught behind in the first session.
If reports in the morning were to be believed, Gill, who opened the batting with Sanvir Singh (0), lost his cool as he walked down the pitch after debutant umpire Pathak committed an error when the former was batting on 10.
It is also said that the umpire ended up revoking his decision which didn’t go down well with the visiting players. From opting not to bowl after the umpire’s new decision to walking off the pitch, the match witnessed all sorts of drama at the PCA Cricket Stadium.
It is worth mentioning that the match resumed after intervention from match referee P Ranganathan. Gill was eventually dismissed by Delhi pacer Simarjeet Singh as he edged a delivery to wicket-keeper Anuj Rawat.

As the day went by, Delhi manager Vivek Khurana opened up on the whole incident and explained in detail regarding what happened and where the Delhi players had decided to walk-off or not.
“The straight umpire [Mohammed Rafi] had adjudged Shubman [Gill] caught behind and the batsman then walked up to the umpire and was seen having an argument asking him to reverse his decision. The straight umpire then consulted the square-leg umpire [Paschim Pathak] and reversed his decision.
“Our skipper [Nitish] Rana just asked the umpires as to why they overturned the initial decision. We never walked out. The match referee [Ranganathan] came in and play resumed as usual,” Khurana was quoted as saying by PTI.
Speaking on the controversy, DDCA (Delhi & Districts Cricket Association) general secretary Vinod Tihara also issued a statement. “The match was halted for seven to eight minutes. There was nothing untoward. Our boys felt that Gill was out and that’s why they asked the umpires why the decision was reversed,” Tihara said.
It was Punjab captain Mandeep Singh who won the toss and chose to bat earlier in the day. At lunch on Day 1, the hosts scored 127/3 in 30 overs on the back of all-rounder Gurkeerat Singh Mann’s 20th First-class half-century. At the time of writing this article, Mandeep has also scored a half-century as Punjab have scored 241/6 in 70 overs.
