Sunil Gavaskar on India's No. 6 in Australia Tests

Sunil Gavaskar on India’s No. 6 in Australia Tests: Former India captain has weighed in on picking Vihari ahead of Sharma.

With the T20I leg of India’s tour of Australia coming to an end, all eyes are now on the all-important Test series which will start form the first Test to be played at Adelaide on December 6.

While the T20I series ended up in a 1-1 draw, fans would be hoping that the four match Test series yields a clear result.

Amid all that has been said and discussed about the Test series, one thing which has allured many opinions is India’s playing XI. The last Test which India played was in India. With a massive change in the conditions, one expects a few changes to happen in their playing eleven as well.

In which is a mammoth 18-member squad, it might just be a case of being spoilt for options as far is the Indian team is concerned. One of the key areas for them to ponder about is the No. 6 position.

In a sans Hardik Pandya squad, India will either have to play an extra batsman and bowl with four specialist bowlers or will play five specialist bowlers. Talking exclusively of batsmen, they would be looking to choose between one out of Hanuma Vihari and Rohit Sharma.

While Vihari looks the more deserving for India due to his performance in his debut Test against England at The Oval, Sharma might just get the nod because of his experience and ‘back-foot’ play.

Sunil Gavaskar on India’s No. 6 in Australia Tests

In a recent interview, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was asked about the same. Gavaskar, too, opted for Vihari citing an interesting reason.

“I would look at Hanuma Vihari because, in the previous Test match that he played, he scored a fifty. So I go with Vihari. And then I would take two spinners and two new-ball bowlers with Hanuma bowling a bit. But again, at Adelaide only because the pitch favours spinners a little,” Gavaskar was quoted.
