Shreyas Iyer's record-breaking maiden T20 hundred

Shreyas Iyer’s record-breaking maiden T20 hundred: Twitter was elated at watching the Mumbai batsman play a smashing knock.

Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer provided a record-breaking start to Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 as he smashed his maiden century in the format. On the first day of the tournament itself, Iyer set a benchmark for the others to follow.

After Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and chose to bat, Iyer came in to bat at No. 3 in the second over. Not wasting much time, Iyer punished the comparatively weaker opposition in Sikkim as he rocketed his way to a blazing century.

Before getting out on the last delivery of the 17th over, Iyer had scored 147 (55) with the help of seven fours and 15 sixes. A strike rate of 267.27 must have been enough to demolish the confidence of the opposition team who were playing their first-ever T20 match.

Iyer breaks several records

Iyer’s innings saw him surpassing India wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant as the highest T20 score by an Indian batsman. The record was earlier with the southpaw who had scored 128* (63) against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Delhi last year. With both of them playing for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, good days don’t seem far for the franchise.

Having hit 15 sixes, Iyer smashed the joint fourth-highest number of sixes in a T20 match. Among the Indian batsmen, Murali Vijay (11) had held the record earlier.

On the back of Iyer’s century and middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s 63 (33), Mumbai ended up scoring 258-4 in their allotted quota of 20 overs. Behind RCB’s 263-5 against Pune Warriors India in 2013 and India’s 260-5 against Sri Lanka in 2017, it is the third-highest T20 score by a team in India.

Iyer’s innings saw him alluring numerous appreciative reactions on social media platform Twitter.
