Just before leaving for the long UK – Ireland and England – tour, Indian Captain Virat Kohli and Head Coach Ravi Shastri have appreciated the Yo-Yo test and talked about the advantages that it can have.

While there was always an emphasis on fitness, things changed drastically once Virat Kohli came into the picture. Especially after he took charge of the team in his hands, he propelled the entire system to be more sensitive towards fitness.

Kohli brought in an altogether new culture in the team. Stars such as Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina were not picked for the reason that they were not able to qualify for the Yo Yo test.

Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has now said, “Both abilities and fitness are important but what fitness does is that it enhances your ability and this is why the Yo Yo test is beneficial.”

In his typical style, Shastri said, “Those who think that this Yo-Yo test is a one-off event, they can go for a walk in the park. It is here to stay. The team management, the selection committee all are on the same page and players have responded beautifully. You pass you play, you fail you sit.”

Like always, Kohli also stressed on the fitness of the players and said that the current crop is a lot fitter and this will certainly be an advantage. Citing an example, Kohli talked about the last session of the three match test series between India and South Africa.

He said that when the chances of a bowler getting tired were very high, Jasprit Bumrah was clocking above 140 km per hour. This is what fitness can do.
